For any therapist, it is rewarding seeing a couple work through difficult problems and find success in a relationship they thought would never last.<\/p>\n<p>But, what if their insurance company doesn\u2019t cover marital therapy?<\/p>\n<p>You are going to have to tell them up front that they are responsible for paying for the sessions if you don\u2019t want to run into problems with their insurance company.<\/p>\n<p>If you can identify that one of your clients has a specific diagnosis which is exacerbated by the marital problem, however, then this is a different matter.<\/p>\n<p>If you are convinced that the primary diagnosis being addressed and therefore treated in your sessions is covered then it is okay to state that you are treating it in your documentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/3049890\/marketing_header_bg.jpg\" alt=\"Is Your Documentation Honestly Reflecting Your Therapy Sessions\" width=\"320\" style=\"width: 320px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Is Your Documentation Honestly Reflecting Your Therapy Sessions\" caption=\"false\" data-constrained=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Try to be as upfront as possible with your documentation<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Being Upfront and Honest<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It is not okay to provide marital therapy and call it something else or apply a diagnosis simply so that you can get the sessions paid for by the clients\u2019 insurance company.<\/p>\n<p>This might be a choice some therapists consider because they\u2019d rather not tell the client that they\u2019re going to be financially responsible for the services they seek.<\/p>\n<p>This is understandable because you wouldn\u2019t want the couple declining the help they need because they can\u2019t afford it.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is not okay if your <a href=\"\/are-your-therapy-notes-as-clear-as-they-should-be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documentation is inconsistent<\/a> with your diagnosis.
